The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the standard diagnostic tool for epidemiology, health management and clinical purposes. The ICD is published by the WHO and used worldwide for morbidity and mortality statistics, reimbursement systems, and automated decision support in health care.The ICD is revised periodically and is currently in its tenth revision.
ICD-10-CM
The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) is a system used by physicians and other healthcare providers to classify and code all diagnoses, symptoms and procedures recorded in conjunction with hospital care in the United States.
ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes consist of three to seven digits, compared to the three to five digit system of ICD-9-CM. The increase in the amount and length of ICD-10-CM codes will allow for greater coding specificity.
